Your trip to Pipestone won't be complete
without a visit to our Downtown Historic
District. A trip down Main Street will take
you to the heart of the district.
Our pioneers left a legacy in stone. From
the quarries nearby, craftsmen obtained
plentiful supplies of native Sioux Quartzite
building stone which they used for
commercial and public buildings.
Many of these buildings remain for our
admiration today. Several of them have been
fully restored. Several are pictured on
these pages.
In the late 1970's, these unique buildings
were recognized by their designation as a
historic district on the National Register.
It was one of the first to be designated as
a district and its boundaries have been
further enlarged by local designation of
sites.
These buildings were constructed
primarily from 1880 to 1900. Most are in the
downtown area or within a few blocks
thereof. You are invited to enjoy these
buildings. More information and guided tours
are available at the Pipestone
County Museum, 113 South Hiawatha.
Walking tour brochures are also available. |
